A team of South Park High School students took third place at the 2019 Governor’s STEM Competition at the Dixon University Center last week. The competition, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, challenged students to research, present and design a device or project that can better the quality of life for Pennsylvanians.

Rudy Mihoces, Matt Witt, Jake Mattis, Michael Ridgeway and Jack Leidemann, under the direction of high school teacher Mr. Ryan Siniawski, created a shredder intended to reduce the volume of the recyclable plastics at South Park High School. The group of students won first place at the regional competition earlier this year and qualified for the state competition. The team also partnered with the high school’s environmental club to boost school-wide recycling efforts.

The South Park team competed against teams from 25 other schools at the statewide competition.
