It was two years ago when Ben Ambrose applied to be a caddie at South Hills Country Club. He treated it as anything but a summer job, and now Ben's hard work has paid off.

Ben, who is a senior, was recently named a recipient of the Evans Scholarship, a life-changing opportunity that will provide him with full tuition and housing at Pennsylvania State University.

To qualify, caddies must meet the requirements of having a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.

"I was told that my outstanding personality and character stood out to the committee, and that’s why they chose me," said Ben.

The initial field of applicants draws caddies from across the state. Ben was then named to the list of seven finalists in Pennsylvania before being named the winner. He was sure it would be a tough competition, but he was also ready for the challenge.

“Never be afraid to attack an opportunity that you are presented with, even if you are unsure of the outcome,” said Ben.

The Evans Scholars Foundation is a charitable trust that provides full, four-year tuition and housing college scholarships to deserving caddies. The Foundation is overseen by the Western Golf Association, which also runs six prestigious golf tournaments, including the BMW Championship. Winners of the scholarship live and work together in Scholarship Houses located on their respective school campuses.

While he caddies, Ben talks to the golfers and learns about their work and careers. Those conversations helped shape his future outlook and he will major in accounting.

Congratulations, once again, to Ben Ambrose!
