At its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, the South Park School District Board of Directors approved a final budget for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. The budget, with expenditures of $37,802,593, includes no tax increase while continuing to provide the resources to deliver quality, student-centered educational initiatives and programs.

The district was able to hold the milage rate at the 2019-2020 level, even with newly negotiated contracts with its teachers, support staff, Act 93 administrators, and executive leadership; a new transportation contract; increasing mandated retirement costs; and an approximately 5% increase in staff healthcare costs.

The new fiscal year budget continues to focus on curriculum and student achievement. The budget includes the hiring of a district curriculum director and the hiring of 2.5 additional teachers. It also includes the purchase of nearly $250,000 in new K-8 curriculum. Included with that purchase was a pilot of the K-6 ELA curriculum at no cost to the district.

The budget includes revenue from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund. These federal funds will be used to support the hiring of three temporary academic intervention teaching positions, professional behavioral health services throughout the district, additional Chromebooks, and software that helps teachers and administrators to use data to personalize and differentiate instruction to individual students based on need.

The district plans to continue offering the South Park Cyber Academy to all interested K-12 students, in an effort to control the rising costs of charter and cyber charter schools in Pennsylvania.

The approved budget includes no reduction of the district’s fund balance.
